A cast iron water utility valve box of class D400 is designed for the safe covering and access to underground parts of the water supply infrastructure.
It is primarily used for access to shut-off valves, faucets, and water meters located in underground chambers or shafts, technical chambers of water connections, and service entries with smaller openings in areas with heavy road traffic where a high load-bearing capacity of the cover is required.
Thanks to its compact design and high durability, it is suitable for urban roads, parking lots, industrial areas, and other locations with heavy machinery traffic, despite being a cover with a smaller access diameter.
The letter "W" (short for Water) is usually marked on the top of the lid for easy identification.

Preparation of the substrate

Remove the old cover and clean the surrounding area of the chamber.
Check the stability and load-bearing capacity of the substrate — it should be flat, solid, and stable.
If necessary, adjust the chamber or its collar to the required height.

Height adjustment

The frame height H270 allows installation without the need for concrete leveling rings.
The frame must be set at the correct height relative to the roadway level.

Concreting the frame

Use high-quality concrete (e.g., C30/37) or mortar according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
The D400 manhole cover frame must be securely anchored into the concrete bedding.
It is important to ensure even seating and levelness of the frame.

Expansion joint and bearing surface

There must be an expansion gap (approximately 1–2 cm) between the frame and the surrounding road structure, filled with a flexible material (e.g., bituminous sealant).
The bearing surface around the frame must be adequately designed to transfer traffic loads.

Installation of the valve box cover

After the concrete has cured (at least 24–48 hours depending on conditions), place the lid into the frame.
Ensure that the lid fits properly and can be securely closed.

Inspection and testing

Check the stability and functionality of the cover lid.
Perform a load test if required.
